The Lightning Thief?

The Lightning Thief
By Rick Rordan

The Lightning Thief by Rick Rordan is a book about a boy named Percy Jackson. His life didn't start out so well at first. His mom was struggling with money, his mom's boyfriend was a pig, and he was not doing well in school. But one day something came up and he had to go to this mysterious camp. Percy had no idea about. It was a camp for half bloods:

  • Half goat/human
  • Half god/human
Percy was  at the same time excited when he found out his father was Posiden the god of water. He goes on an adventure with his friends Grover and Annabeth to find Zeus' stolen master bolt. In the end, (*SPOILER ALERT*) Luke, one of the camp counselors and percy's "friend", stole the bolt.

But the movie says otherwise...
When you finish reading this you will know why you should most definitely read the book before the movie.

One reason why you should read the book before watching the movie is the characters said, acted, and looked different in the movie than they did in the book. For example Annabeth is supposed to be blond. She is also supposed to have an invisibility cap to help them get out of trouble during the quest. Of course the movie HAD to change that. They took it out! Another example is that Grover is not supposed to be outgoing and brave. In fact he is supposed to be shy and scared. I don't know if changing this was supposed to make the story more dramatic or something but it would have been better to keep it the same. A final example is the change in what Percy's mom does.  In the book she leaves Posiden and stays with Hades to show her independence.  In the movie Grover stays behind instead of her.  This shows that the characters have been changed in the movie.

Another reason why you should read the book before watching the movie is that the movie changed the adventure!!!!! One example is that the whole adventure in the book is supposed to be percy and his friends are looking for Zeus' stolen matter bolt. In the movie the adventure is trying to find pearls that will help them escape hell. Those pearls are in the book but they are a gift from posiden NOT THE WHOLE QUEST!!!!!!!!Another example is that Clarisse (daughter of Ares) is supposed to fight percy. in fact she is supposed to attack percy and cut him which is when he finds out is after is Posiden. In the movie CLARISSE NOR ARES ARE IN THE MOVIE!!!!! A final example is that Hades isn't supposed to die!!! in the movie for drama they made persephone kill hades, which can't ever happen. this proves why the adventure was changed too much.

A final reason why you should read the book before watching the movie is that its better to imagine the characters and places yourself. One example is that if you read the book after you have already watched the movie you will imagine the characters the way they looked in the movie.  You don't get to do your own envisioning when reading it.  Another example is that its better to see what others think the characters and places look like after you have imagined how they look.  You can compare how you imagined with how they are portrayed in the movie.   And finally its fun to imagine things on your own. Its fun to see what possible things you could think of but if you watch the movie first you don't get that experience.  This shows that it's better to imagine these things on your own.

In conclusion you should read the book before watching the movie even for any book because it makes you a stronger thinker.   For one reason you imagine what things look like and two, you can find the differences and similarities in the movie and book.  All in all if they were going to change the book The Lightning Thief to make it a movie then don't call it The Lightning Thief.
